Emperor Hirohito, Order of the Rising Sun

Post by R-Bob The Great! » 01 Mar 2003 07:44

My dad's friend just gave me a signed decoration of the Order of the Rising Sun which he purchased at a garage sale for a mere 10 Canadian Dollars.

I was wondering if any of you could tell anything about it, perhaps the reciever or the medal itself. It is given to a SIr Maberly Esler Dening who was a British Diplomat to Japan in the 1950's.

It is the 1st Class Order and is signed in Japanese calligraphy by Emperor Hirohito himself. The translation reads:

Patent of Declaration

We, the Emperor of Japan, do hereby confer upon Sir Maberly Esler Dening , British Subject, the First Class of the Order of the Rising Sun.
In witness thereof, We have caused the Seal of State affixed to these presents, which We ave signed with Our own hand at the Imperial Palace. This Day, the Eight of the Fifth Month of the Thirty-Ninth Year of Showa (1964).

If anyone could tell me anything about it that would be great.
