This photo shows a Focke-Wulf Fw 58 "Weihe" of the C5 Pilot School during a formation flight from Neubrandenburg Airport, Mecklenburg. on August 28, 1943.

Up until 1942 Max was active as a glider pilot, including at the Homberg and Teck gliding schools. In October 1942 he was conscripted into the Flieger-Regiment 63 in Prouvy and in Toul, France. In the Beginning of 1943 he began training at the pilot school AB 124 in Diedenhofen (Thionville). From May to November 1943 he was at the C5 Pilot School in Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg. From February to March 1944 he was in the non-commissioned officer course in Melun, France. In March 1944 he was assigned to IV. Gruppe of Kampfgeschwader 2 at Villaroche airfield, France. In May 1944 this unit was transferred to Budapest - Ferihegy airfield. In early 1945 he joined I. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 108 in Bad Vöslau, Austria. He survived the war and was a glider pilot again from 1951 and lived until the 2000s.
