Mike from Canada, new here - from a letter to my mother from my father in Berlin 1945 - requesting assistance in identifying this unit of 6 panzers from 2.Rz.Ers.Abt.300 moved from Neurippen to Berlin, some 80 kms in 3 days. Now in Karlshorst guarding the stadtkommandanten. Date is march 5 1945 and feldpost is 67362A.

Earlier location Grafenwoer feldpost 64092B.

Eisenach feldpost number 2251.

Thank you.

67362
(25.11.1944-8.5.1945) 27.2.1945 Stab u. Einheit Panzer-Vernichter-Abteilung 1. (The 'A' indicates that he was in the Stab)

64092
(25.11.1944-8.5.1945) 9.2.1945 Stab u. Einheit Panzer-Abteilung 303. ( The 'B' indicates 1 Kompanie)

There is no number of 2251 as FpNr's generally consist of 5 digits (or 6 in a small number of cases.)

Thank you Hucks - I was able to trace this feldpost on Lexicon der Wehrmacht, and also read unit account by Ron Klages on this site.
Now I am trying to research the final actions - it appears his 6 panzerschreck on borgward chassis were guading the stab in March.
I will try to find details of Berlin action and transition to street fighting on foot, old story that he was fighting a block or so away from the Fuherebunker.

Question - why do you think he was reassigned from Pz Abt 303 to Pz Vernichter Abt 1? Where and when did this unit first see action?

The best book to read about the fighting in Berlin is Bloody Streets by Stephan Hamilton, but unfortunately it is now becoming a very expensive book to buy.
As for the transfer, it could be any one of a number of reasons but I'd imagine that they needed people to equip the second unit and he was one of those 'chosen'.

There is some information about the Wanze Borgward B IV Ausführung mit Raketenpanzerbüchse 54 here...
http://anonymous-generaltopics.blogspot ... z-301.html
...which has one sentence for the Panzer-Vernichter-Abteilung 1...
There were 56 "Borgward B IV Ausführung mit Raketenpanzerbüchse 54" machines build in early 1945 from retired dynamite-carriers at drill ground at Grafenwahr. They were armed with six-rocket-gun at the left of the driver (there are seldom photos of them). There are also some seldom photos showing wrecks of the "Wanze" near the Brandenburger Tor. All B-IV Panzerjager were used by the Panzer-Vernichter-Abteilung 1 at the final fight in Berlin.

I have the book Funklenkpanzer by Marcus Jaugitz (ISBN: 0-921991-58-4 )and there is information in the book about Panzer Vernichter Abteilung 1 as it was formed from Funklenk units. It also has some photos of the unit in Berlin.

Yes I have heard this is THE book - I must get a copy as it is referred to extensively. I wonder if there are any survivor accounts of this unit published?

Hi,
Hard to read, but I think the feldpost number in the soldbuch is 16507, or maybe 16587. Any info would be appreciated.
Best,
Tony

71300 doesn't exist. I don't think it is a FpNr.
