Cool... I've got a pic of exactly the same sign! And no, no idea where it was taken.Geoff Walden wrote:The sign is the funny part of this one. (No, I don't know where this was taken ... I bought it at a flea market in Fulda.)

Hello!
Best regards, Aleks
IIRC, this pciture was taken at Soviet Volkhov Front during Lyuban offensive operation (when Vlasov's 2nd Strike Army was destroyed by the Germans). Still, no guarantee I am right.B Hellqvist wrote:And no, no idea where it was taken.

That's better than nothing. Thanks! I'll try to post a second pic, which might be the other side of the sign.

American forces usually say it is in Guam.

Here's the other side of the sign:

If I'm not mistaken, it says something like "If you go beyond [this sign] remember Götz von Berlichingen", alluding to his famous reply "He can lick my arse!".

Hello,
you can find many photos which where taken at this sign. It was very famous because of its “exact” and “clear” description of the situation.
As I wrote before: this sign stood at the entrance of the so called "Schlauch" (hose) which was the only way to the battlefield situated in the Wolchow swamps in 1942. All the soldiers, the supplies, the wounded, etc. where forced to use a small trail (couple of km long) which was partly under fire from the Red army. There was also a light railway, the so called Wolchow express available. Fierce fighting in the swamps, huge casualties, mosquitos, malaria, etc. made a real nightmare out of this place. For the arriving soldiers the sign says: Here´s the beginning of the middle of nowhere. For the leaving soldiers who survived all this, it has the Berlichingen citation. "Gehst Du von hinnen, denk an Götz von Berlichingen" means "When you leave think of Götz von Berlichingen".
all the best,
Ralf

Thanks for the info, Ralf! I had no idea that this loaction was known, or that there were other photos of the sign.
Here is a Christmas-themed "funny." Nicolaus and Knecht Ruprecht (I guess that's the other guy) with a Pzkw. I chassis. (For the Armor folks, this appears to be a Pzkw. I Ausf. B "ohne Aufbau" - a chassis without superstructure or turret, made as a repair/recovery vehicle, but probably used for driver training. It carries the Bison insignia of Panzer Regt. 7, 10th Panzer Div., at the back of the superstructure.)

Guess you didn´t take part in the fightings, what is your source for the above?Baldrick wrote:[...]As I wrote before: this sign stood at the entrance of the so called "Schlauch" (hose) which was the only way to the battlefield situated in the Wolchow swamps in 1942. Re: Third Reich Funny Photos
Hi,
years ago I found a photo of this „eye-caching“ sign among other photos from a relative of mine. Later I was lucky to interview a veteran from his regiment who surprisingly had a picture taken at the same spot.
The sign and the fighting in that area are described in a couple of books, e.g. in Richter, Werner, "Die 1. (ostpreussische) Infanterie – Division”, München, 1975 , page 83 - 90
all the best,
Ralf
