First step ; At the moment, I only know what it is Infanterie Française, new outfit of 1915.
A Model 1886 Lebel bayonet confirms it.
From my books of WWI Uniforms .

Second Step, search for movies of early French Army combats in 1914-1915, in List of World War I films Wikipedia.
Not Joyeux Noël, not A Very Long Engagement, not Captain Conan, I will try with ' La Peur (The Fear): All Is Not Quiet on the Western Front '

Correct so far, but none of the movies you have mentioned. France, first weeks of 1915, the Poilu on the picture is victim of blatant military injustice. Based on a true story.

Third step ; Searching for French caporal soldier Louis Barthas ( poilu memories ), I was trying to find if he had any movies of his book..
in IMDB with the keyword "french-military" the wanted film appeared on a list ; ' Le pantalon ' (1997 TV Movie), by Yves Boisset.
Totally unknown movie for me, and more being from the TV circle.

Looks interesting, I will have to watch it

Plot summary: When Lucien Bersot is drafted to the french army he is given a pair of white trousers because at the moment no red trousers fitting Luciens size are available. Later at the front during an inspection the regiments commander insists that Lucien had to wear the usual red pants. A sergeant brings him a dirty, bullet riddeled and blood sullied pair of red trousers taken from a fallen comrade but Lucien refuses to put them on. His Captain gives him 8 days of arrest for disobeying orders but the Colonel, in order to boost the morale of his troops, what to make an example of Bersot. He brings him before a martial court where he is prosecutor and judge in one person, absolutely illegal. Lucien is sentenced to death and executed the following morning. Two of his comrades that supported him got years of hard labour in north africa. This happened on February 13th 1915.


Good movie, worth watching. Saw it several years ago in german TV.
