Definitely Bruno Ganz despite he had to wear a wig.
But I don´t think his voice was similar to Hitler's.
Hitler's voice had more bass and also his "r" was more rattling.

Definitely Charlie Chaplin. The scene with Hitler dancing through his office with a globe is one of the most funniest ones I've ever seen.

Seriously now, Bruno Ganz would seem the most realistic one.

Until Bruno Ganz, Anthony Hopkins was the best. It was more realistic to see Hitler speaking German rather than English, Also when he is shown interviewing his new secretaries I got a creepy feeling because he was calm and kind. Then go forward to 1945 and you can see how events have wrecked him. A good performance for him, though Goebbels was too tall, and the SS Dr. Schenk(?) a little too kind.

Ow! That was scary!

Does anyone remember that series of war movies that came out of the then Soviet Union? They cast actors that were dead ringers for their historical counterparts, from the obscure (for us) Gen. Vlasov to Skorzeny and Goebbels. The (East) German actors were speaking German with an English voiceover. (The Russians were dubbed in English, the best dubbing I'd seen until 'Das Boot' came along.)

Oddly, the most unrealistic (IMHO) casting (appearance-wise) was their Hitler, who looked a bit chubby.

As for Robert Carleyl, I thought he came across as an absolute NUT, totally inaccurate.
I remember how the behind-the-scenes feature showed how Bobby Carlyle made a big thing out of insisting he not be disturbed while he was in his trailer rehearsing his moves. It show3ed a shot of him through the trailer window trying to get Hitler's mannerisms.

Playing devil's advocate, I'm just wondering if this villification is deserved. While his portrayal also didn't seem 'right' with me, I put it down to the fact that he was playing a much younger Hitler, who would have acted differently.

Or the scene when Hitler and Mussolini tried to impress each other on the hairdresser's chair. Priceless!

What was the real life name of the doctor portrayed in the movie "Downfall". He asked Hitler if he could leave and Hitler told him no so he used two hand grenades and blew up himself and his family at the dinner table.

Thank you,

David

I agree with Bruno Ganz, what a stunning portrayal. I do also like Robert Carlyle in "Rise of Evil", but maybe that's because I'm a fan of Robert Carlyle!

Steven Berkoff gave an excellent portrayal of Hitler in the 1986 mini-series "War And Remembrance"

He probably gets my vote as the best movie Hitler of all-time with Bruno Ganz taking 2nd place for his performance in "Downfall"

1. Steven Berkoff
(War And Remembrance)

2. Bruno Ganz
(Der Untergang: The Downfall)

3. Luther Adler
(Rommel: The Desert Fox)

Best regards,

I see someone else has suggested Chaplin. I'd add to the list John Cleese. While he was perhaps a little too tall for the role, he had IMHO the mannerisms down pat for the speeches delivered from the balcony of "a small boarding house, Minehead, Somerset".
