--For some reason I never got the word I'd guessed the answer to the quiz here. Please accept my apologies.

--This film is considered one of the 100 best films ever made. The story is built in part around WW I prisoners of war and their interaction with the German prison commandant, whose hobby is growing a plant. Name the film.

--And if you've never seen it, try to, because it's superb.

Dear MW,
What film involves a group of patients at a British military hospital near the coast of England which is being shelled from across the channel by a German rail gun and the patients break out to silence the gun.

OK, as I assume I got the answer right, here is my question:

This actor spent part of WWII as a "kriegie" and appeared in a movie as a POW escapee and its sequel as a guard. He had, at the time of his death over 500 film credits to his name, making him perhaps the most prolific actor in movies. Who was he and what was the movie?
Burton's character, MacRoberts, was an English officer in charge of mixed Anglo/Aussie unit in "The Desert Rats".

As no one appears to have stepped up, how about this one?

It featured the only Australian produced tank during WWII, the Sentinel.

A still from the movie:

1944 “The Rats of Tobruk” or the abridged 1951 US version “The Fighting Rats of Tobruk” ?

Thanks! Next some clues to help in solving the title.
A 1976 TV adaption of a 1939 novel. Was also made as a film in 1941 but under a different name.
Answer is: The original novel and ‘76 TV title, please.
Bonus points for 1941 title!

Waleed,

difficult...

Thought about "All Quiet on the Western Front", but the sequel is from the year 1979, starring "John-Boy" Richard Thomas...

Another hint, please?
