How did Gene Hackman do such an awful job in "Uncommon Valor" and then played a good believable role in "Bat 21"?

Bat 21 is a top 5 war film, especially for the Vietnam genre.

"The Fall of Berlin", a Soviet propaganda movie, must surely rank among the worst.

Are we talking worst technically, or worst in terms of intellectual dishonesty? Technically, Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red line are two of the best war movies made. However, they are intellectually dishonest and fake in their depiction of historical reality. The old WW 2 propaganda movies like "Flying tigers" Or "Sahara" were so technically bad - from a 21st Century view - that their "hate the enemy" propaganda didn't have much impact. The worst thing about the two movies I mentioned is you have racism against the Japanese and hatred against the Germans packed with very realistic war scenes. Its a bad combination.

One that hasn't been mentioned, and it is truly wretched, is the war movie-sci fi combo Zone Troopers. It is just horrid. The aliens are idiotic. The special effects are amateurish. The acting is awful. It's chock full of clichés, tired tropes, on top of making no sense as a story. It's supposed to occur in the Italian theater about 1944, but the plot makes almost no sense. It's as if the writers and producers just strung a bunch of semi-related nonsense scenes together...

Do you mean like Overlord [2018] and Redcon-1?

Going back to the thin red line, has anyone seen the orginal movie from 1964?
It is on youtube and the qualitiy is okay, it is different then the latests version but is similar in someways, with a few scenes picked out and redone in the new version.
