It's pathetic, what you have to read here about one of the best anti-war films ever.

It is not worth continuing to exchange ideas with such ignoramuses, it is completely pointless.

People write about German military history in an internet forum and unfortunately don't have the faintest idea, what it's all about...

Frightening, a sign of the times...

Will people please cease swearing and making personal comments. Both things are against the rules and this should not need repeating.

Well, I get the feeling that the number of people on this forum who actually care about German military history is declining...

Hi Westphalia1812,

no, that's normal, you have to have grown up earlier to understand these simple films, and the message of these early post-war films is very simple:

Krieg ist die Hölle! / War is hell!

Anyone who hasn't experienced veterans themselves, who crawled around without legs, who were constantly drunk because their memories caught up with these men again and again, how they beat their wives and children, over and over again, will not understand this film, that is just like that.

As a young boy, I experienced the late 1950s and 1960s firsthand.
Violence, shame and old slogans were the order of the day, PTSD was completely unknown.

But all that was a long time ago, and it's almost not true anymore, that was a different time.

A very emotional topic, that moved my childhood and adolescence, the years of the German economic miracle, but behind the closed front doors and windows everything was let out there, a bad time for the members of the veterans.

When my best friend Hans-Jürgen's father was out and about on his roller board, the alarm went off...

The old man without legs was a tough dog, very much feared.
The man chased his four children and me like stray dogs, like a pack of dogs.

The veteran was badass, there were no apologies, just a beating.
When the man got drunk he would put this single on, always...

Der lachende Vagabund

Father sat in his corner, dead drunk, we children danced to the record.
This is how I remember a German veteran of World War II, the father of my friend Hans-Jürgen.

Not very good memories, just a bunch of shit actually!

Alcohol and violence was the solution then, there were no counseling centers, no organizations for veterans, only poverty, violence, and drunkenness.

The man died in his bed, protected to the last by his loving wife.

I think film is to entertain and so considerable liberties are taken with reality to move the plot along. Characters talk when they would not. They are clean when they would be dirty. They appear fresh when they should be extremely fatigued. They crowd when they should spread out. They expose when they would conceal.... The list is too long. Seeing actual ww2 and Vietnam combat footage, not staged, shows how impromptu and muscle memory driven combat is plus the primitive need for survival.(the body naturally recoils to protect privates, the head depresses into once neck like a turtle, the hunching so as to be a small target, etc..

True most movies are entertaining and as for being factual....1% factual and 99 % entertaitment fiction like the movies "1776" about the signing of the declaration of Indepence or Meg gibsons "the patriot" or "The Sound of Music" {every time i see even a glimpse of the last move I feel like throwing up it so sicking sweet and nice,,,,,]

Oh, it's not hard to say. This is Seal Patrol. Only on imdb it has a rating of 3.6 and I think that this is still too high. It would be interesting to find such a thread, but with better films. Maybe I don't know something and just refresh my knowledge.
