Best depiction of Reinhard Heydrich?

#1

Post by Fletch_UK » 09 Jun 2014, 22:11

What, in your opinions, is the best fictional depiction of Reinhard Heydrich?

I like Brannagh's take in Conspiracy, and the German fellow in the DWC TV film made in the early '80s.
In fiction, Kerr's take on Heydrich is brilliant.

On another tack; Heydrich takes lead antagonist role in Jackboot Britain, my alternate history novel, in particularly Machiavellian form... and if anyone here happens to have read the book, any feedback from the good folk of AH would be fantastic! Also depicted from the ranks of the SS and Polizei; Walther Schellenberg, Heinrich Himmler, Arthur Nebe, Amon Goeth and most of the major SD-Einsatzgruppen commanders of notoriety. And some Hitler, Göring and Bormann for good measure...

This is probably a subject best listed in the section "world wars in fiction". David Warner portrayed Heydrich twice in both Holocaust and Hitler's SS: Portrait of Evil. Good acting and a memorable role for him (at least in my mind). Realistic enough to assume Warner had read through a few books on him....Warner's portrayal seems like it was straight out of Alan Wykes's Ballantine Book.

David Warner is a good shout. In particular his Heydrich depiction in "Portrait of Evil" was very memorable.

Even though he was a tad old for the role, he had that look, and carried it well.

and the German fellow in the DWC TV film made in the early '80s.
German actor, Dietrich Mattausch.

David Warner portrayed Heydrich twice in both Holocaust and Hitler's SS: Portrait of Evil.
In Holocaust series, David Warner makes a unconvincing Reinhard Heydrich, always tired, boring, and even drunk ( Burp included ).
I couldn't see the other production, yet.

Anton Diffring, was a credible Heydrich in "Operation Daybreak" (1975).
A well made British production.

Von Thoma
I have not seen the film you mention above but I wanted to warn that if you did not like Warner's Heydrich in "Holocaust" you won't like the portrayal in "Hitler's SS"....Warner plays Heydrich the same way in both films. He made "Holocaust" in 1978, so he simply resumed the same persona for the 1985 film.

From the scene depicting "Night of the Long Knives":

Good shout!

Alas, being in Thailand I could only download that film to watch it, and the version I got was sans subtitles. Easy enough to follow the general premise, and the bulk of the film is in English and centred around the assassins... but it did rankle a tad, not being able to understand Heydrich in every scene :? well-acted though.

Here is one of the earliest portrayals of Heydrich, from the WWII Warner Bros. film "Hitler's Madman" (1943) played by John Carridine (father of Carridine of TV show "Kung Fu" fame). One of the actors in this clip is Ralph Morgan, brother of Frank Morgan who played the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz (1939).

Under the name of Biondo, John Steiner performed a strange Heydrich's portrayal in "Salon Kitty" (1978).
