Streets of Stalingrad 4th Edition Announced (SOS4) 15 February 2017

The fourth edition of the classic “monster” game Streets of Stalingrad (SOS) has been announced by Lombardy Studios and 626 Designs. In May a Kickstarter (KS) will offer playtest kits along with special discounts and in-game bonus items for KS supporters. The full game Kickstarter will launch in September—the 75th anniversary of the start of the battle for the city.

SOS4 has been in production for more than 2 years. Final playtesting and print-ready files will be completed over the next several months so the game can be printed this coming fall immediately following the September Kickstarter.

First released in 1979, SOS saw three previous award-winning editions by Dana Lombardy and David Parham. SOS4 includes 30 years of additional research by Russell Schulke (626 Designs) in Soviet archives in Volgograd (modern day Stalingrad) and outside Moscow. The Soviet order-of-battle now equals the detail and accuracy of the German side.

The basic game system remains the same as the third edition, but now includes expanded air forces for both sides, the ships of the Volga River Flotilla, and river crossing rules/combat.

You can see the revised artwork, samples counters, and more at SOS-4.com and also sign up to receive email updates. A link to a special Streets of Stalingrad Chronicles blog series provides background on the game, the SOS4 team, fascinating historical facts, and more.

A Wargamers Needful Things will be reviewing SoS 4th Edition when it's released.

This game is set to be a must own. Even as an investment because once out of print you'll end up getting a good return. So even if for some strange reason you didn't enjoy it at least you know you'll get your money back+:)

Is there a tactical disparity between the opposing factions?

Yes, everything is based the 6th and 62 Armies records, including surviving Army, Corps, Division, Brigades and Regiments journals/histories.

I would recommend reading the SOS4 blog each week; Dana Lombardy currently has a four-part series called “1,500 Combat Units Need Game Values” which covers that topic.

(This would gradually change and the Red Army would eventually equal and surpass the Germans.)
The score effectiveness of the Red Army never surpassed the Axis forces during the entire war, whether it seems politically incorrect to state or not, the Red Armies ability to concentrate forces was not particularly spectacular. In military studies, the efficiency of a force is described via a factor, lets say alpha, the quotient of both forces efficiency can be described as k, which is the Square of the numerical superiority a qualitatively superior force can engage, or SQRT(k), which correlates to S - the numerical superiority of the opponent, k and S equal when a "break even" point occurs, the reinforcements (and thus the numerical superiority) will even out the odds.
Furthermore, the Radio was not the only reason for the superior coordination of forces, Napoleons Imperial Army possessed superior coordination vis the Coalition armies before the radio was even invented.

UPDATE ON MAY SOS-4 PLAYTEST KIT KICKSTARTER LINK

#10

Post by Russ Schulke » 29 May 2017, 00:11

Image

Instead of launching the playtest kit Kickstarter (KS) for SOS-4 in May, we decided to take the kits to Consimworld Expo in Tempe, AZ and get feedback from the attendees and all of our other supporters before we have the KS go live soon after convention.

We also wanted to get everyone's feedback on the KS page itself so we can make corrections or additions to it before it goes live.

Here's a link to this test KS page for the SOS-4 playtest kits: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/68 ... n=7da07a25

Note: STRETCH GOAL #2
The basic playtest kit offered is "The Grain Elevator" scenario of the fighting in the southern area of the city. If we reach $34,000 ($14,500 over our goal) we will include a complete, second scenario "Race to the Volga" (breakthrough by 16th Panzer Division to the river near the northern suburbs). That's TWO complete games with separate maps, counters, and set up sheets to all $50 supporters!
