Briefly mentioned in a New York Times Article of the Day, A "different kind of War" was taking Place in the desolate border area between Imperial Japan and Soviet Russia Machines of War.

This action , and many others , even dating back to the Russo-Japanese Port Arthur incident can be tactically studied using the Advanced Squad Leader Game System , modules Beyond Valor, Rising Sun Counters.

Scenario Title: Dune Deal
Date; July 2, 1939
Location: Nomonhan Manchukuo/Mongolia
Situation: Diplomatic Measures between Soviet Russia and Imperial Japan were left to Military Commanders posted to the Region. Commanders of The Imperial Japanese Army and Commanders of Soviet Forces were advised that the area around Nomonhan was Off Limits to the other side. In an unforeseen turn of event, Military Forces became involved. Forces of Imperial Japan were ordered to the area to stress the point, while Soviet Commanders conducted routing patrols. During these actions fighting broke out. Japanese Forces advancing toward the Kawamata Bridge from the North were pinned down in the Dunes North of Nomonhan, by heavy fire from across the River.

The Soviet 82 Mortar scores a DR 2 Critical Hit lead tankete, the Mortar attack is resolved on 32 FP Column IFT per Critical Hit Rules, Mortar Full FP of 16 IFT Column is doubled. Trailing Tankette enters Stream Hex at 3 MP, is -1 level stream hex cannot be fired on in any stream hex unless unit is Adjacent. Japanese 2nd Line Infantry Squads go CX along Road, Road Bonus allows One Extra Hex, to Move behind screen of Trees. Japanese Leader stacks, each 2 2nd line Squads w/Crew MMG, use assault move to Enter from North 2nd Stack will use Advance Phase to Enter Building Hex after First Stack Moves onto B 40 Hex B-0 to take cover behind the Level one Hill. blind hex
