What planes used in Band of Brothers?

Post by PatrickBateman » 25 Jan 2018 21:18

I noticed in the comment section of this video that everybody disagrees with each other which plane flies over during this scene in Band of Brothers.

The top 3 aircraft that it could be are:
A-20 Havoc
B-26 Marauders
Mosquito's

What aircraft do you think it is? (or you KNOW what plane it is, show it with proof ofcourse). Let's solve this 'mystery'.

They are Mosquitos.

See attached screen captures.

Ouch! Seem like the special effects guys made a slight error in second last picture or is it just my eyes or the screenshot? The plane looks like it's flying under the wires ;)

It's the screen shot. This one shows it better, the plane has a left engine failure. The prop is windmilling! .

The effects are still poor. The foreground is crystal clear, but the planes are very fuzzy.
My guess is that they stitched in film of low flying mosquitoes on anti shipping strikes off Norway.
There is some on youtube.

It is unlikely to be a Havoc or Marauder. Both aircraft have significant dihedral
on their horizontal stabilizers. This shows clearly viewed from any angle.
There is none showing the aircraft in the scene.

Thanks Tomg44. Looking at this picture of plane in almost same angle I would agree. It's a swarm of mosquitos.

I don't think the effects are poor. You have to remember this series is from 2001, so the editing software was probably something from the late 90s. I think it looks good and still keeps up with today effects.

I have to agree that the planes matches the Mosquitos, but do we think it was the editor purpose to choose this aircraft or just "some WW2 plane?". What I mean is that this effect was just an random aircraft in the shape of a typical Allied bomber. But then again, I agree that it must be a Mosquito while I first thought it was a A-20.
