Winds of War/War and Remembrance

Post by HistPolity » 15 Jun 2019 14:55

Hi all, long time since I've posted.

Since Herman Wouk recently passed away, I've been rewatching the Winds of War and War and Remembrance series on Youtube. The acting and characters are all pretty decent. While from what I've read the events depicted in the film, such as the horrific Holocaust ones are highly accurate. Likewise, Wouk and the series screenwriters did a very thorough job of illustrating the inter-service debates about Lend-Lease, the operational aspects of Midway, why the Third Reich lost, etc.

The only negative I can think of at least with the film versions of the series is that Wouk did not show the Japapense viewpoint of the war while he showed the American, British, Soviet, and German angles of World War II. Then again his books are on next on my reading list, so maybe he will go into that viewpoint more in his actual writing.

Recommend to also watch the 1970s miniseries The Holocaust. Also available on youtube.
