Strategic Picture:
Located Near Guadalcanal
After The Battle for Guadalcanal, the Japanese Command setup an Airstrip at Munda Point, on New Georgia. with express Instruction that
Munda be Fortified to the extent necessary to inflict a defeat on U S Forces advancing up the Solomon Islands.
In early July 1943, U S Troops landed 8 Mile NW of Munda to cutoff reinforcement of Munda , while another landing , 3 miles east of Munda, was to advance toward the Airfield. U S Troops approaching from the east, endured adverse Weather, Treacherous Terrain and exhaustion. On July 10, they reached a hill, festooned will Pillboxes blocking the Munda Trail, and the Advance.
The Battle that followed was described as WW1 type fighting, with Heavy Shelling followed by U S Infantry charges across shattered landscape.
Attempts to outflank the defenses proved futile. U S losses mounted to the point that further attacks were canceled until further reinforcements could be brought up.
