Is anyone in a position to be able to compare two editions of a book for me? The book I am interested in is a U-boat novel by C. H. Guenter called U-Boot Laurin antwortet nicht. It was originally published as a paperback by Ullstein in 2005, and then a hardback edition was published by Weltbild in 2007. The Ullstein edition is 153 pages in length; the Weltbild edition 119 pages.

What is the reason for such significantly different page lengths? Is it just a question of formatting, or is the Weltbild edition abridged?

There are some other U-boat novels whose Weltbild editions have the same page count as their Ullstein counterparts. U-Boot Laurin antwortet nicht appears to be an exception.
