Thank you, Mr. Enigma229, this is a true New-year's gift! :D However, I have problems downloading it, so I would really appreciate if you David could send it to me via e-mail as well. I'll send you a PM.

Does anyone know the name of the song the wounded soldiers are singing at the hospital in "Cross of Iron" when the General walks in?

What's the march name in the beginning ”Cross Of Iron”?

Post by INLET » 27 Apr 2018 11:38

The beginning of "Cross of Iron" is composed of "Hanschen klein" and march, but i can't find that march name.
I found the song which has same music in Youtube, but I think it is sung by russian.(Because it is maybe ROA's song.)

Anyone know the name of this march?
Is it a so famous song in Western that Sam Peckinpah used that?

Hello and :welcome:

There was already a thread dealing with this soundtrack, however, there's no answer to your question there. I myself was looking for the name of that march for years (being a huge fan of the movie), but without luck.

The ROA song (Мы идём широкими полями...) actually seems to be the origin of the second melody; according to the website Русские Латвии, the composer is М. Давыдов. However, I don't know how accurate info from the website is. Also, I've seen people (incorrectly) linking the melody of "Мы идём" to the Soviet "Песни о Родине", although the melodies are quite different. This doesn't mean that the ROA song's melody wasn't based on some other Soviet tune. (But, in this case, which one?)

The conclusion (so far) is that the "Cross of Iron" intro was composed of two songs: German "Hänschen klein" and (right-wing) Russian "Мы идём". If anyone has any different info on the origin of the Russian melody, do let us know.

Thanks for response.
I'm terribly sorry that I've let this topic sit around for two years.
