I don't think it can top Frank Pierson's excellent British production 'Conspiracy' ( 2001 ).

Some pictures of the new movie ;

2001 "Conspiracy" is a very good film however is probably lacking in historical accuracy. A lot of good British actors are in it, and the screenplay is tight and clever, and written mainly to entertain/provoke rather than inform. It is rather shakespearean in style, and not surpringly Kenneth Branagh is Heydrich.

There is also a German film from 1984 about the conference.

Branagh performs a magnificent role, despite being dyed and resembling Heydrich like an egg to a chestnut...
His cynical and contemptuous attitude draws a lot of attention, but he becomes a perfect host.

Good afternoon, and thank you for your comments.

I have now seen the new film version once, and feel it is very good, from my point of view as a German viewer.
I am of course familiar with the German production from 1984.
The English / American production from 2001 unfortunately not.

A horrible subject, was, and always will be difficult to present, but every approach, no matter how bad, is important.

An important film, in a probably endless series of other films about this subject, the future will tell us...

Hans

P.S. The grimness of Jakob Diehl as Heinrich Müller was frighteningly good, downright disturbing, an extraordinary acting performance.
As a normal thinking person you can't cope with all this, never, all this goes beyond our mind.

I had a different view.

For dramatic, rather than historical purposes, his role in Conspiracy came across as a bit miscast, for in my mind Ralph Fiennes already played much of Heydrich in Schindler's List. Somehow I just don't see Kenneth as Heydrich, but Ralph Fiennes.

Kenneth Brannagh is a superb Shakespearean actor and his Hamlet/Henry V are the best renditions I've ever seen. The best Coriolanus on film is Ralph Fiennes. This character, the lonely dragon, has Heydrich like traits. A merging of the personability of the Conspiracy role, Coriolanus, and the Amon G., played by Ralph Fiennes would have been perfect. Fiennes looks a lot more like Heydrich too.

Also, this film is heavily inspired from the 1984 German film.

All opinions are of course welcome

I don't remember any role of Ralph Fiennes as Reinhard Heydrich in' Schindler's List '.....he played as Amon Goeth, commander of Płaszów camp.
I think you are very influenced by previous roles of Brannagh, that conditions a lot, but he was an actor, new and clean to me, when I saw this movie approx. in 2004.

Going back to Conspiracy ( 2001 ), a favourite moment from the film.

Rudolf Lange ; I have the real feeling I evacuated 30,000 Jews already, by shooting them at Riga. Is what I did evacuation ?
When they fell, were they evacuated ?
Heydrich ; Yes. In my personal opinion, they are evacuated...( tells annoying and throws a hateful look at Lange )

All three film adaptions were and are okay, to our "modern" standards.

Who throws in the movie "Schindlers List" in this topic, did not understand at all, not the movie, not the topic.
"German Bureaucracy" at the final peak, our fathers and our grandfathers decided about the "final solution".

My german grandfather wore the swastika armband on his uniform, he was involved in all this, he knew all about this.

Accepting this, almost a decade later, this is important, all this, and more happened, sometimes here in Germany
named the "german shame", follwing us for a thousand years...

Is it because of the lighting which makes the SS uniforms look greenish?

I think, only a German film can be a good film, often it was and is the small subtleties of the German language that are not understandable in a translated version and never will be.

The "sense" of the German language cannot be translated, this bureaucratic German only works in German.

All of this is not transferrable to another language, there is no doubt about that.

They are the German films from 1984 and 2022, untranslatable.
