After initial war successes in North Africa, newsreels and radio built Wehrmacht General Erwin Rommel into an early media hero: an absolutely new phenomenon at the time. Only when he was suspected of having supported the assassins of July 20 in 1944 did Hitler give him a choice: the death penalty by the People's Court or suicide with a cyanide capsule. To this day, historians such as the Potsdam military historian Peter Lieb and the Stuttgart historian Wolfram Pyta are concerned with how justified this suspicion was.

* The documentary includes some little-known photos from his childhood and youth.

Typical German educational television, but quite well done, you can watch...

A good man and an important contemporary witness.
