YES!!!! BY JOVE, YOU'VE GOT IT!! I have the original press kit from the movie and although it doesn't list his name and character there are clues. First the actor who played him was either in his late 20's or early 30's. Second, in my humble opinion, It makes sense if you think of it this way. It was filmed entirely in Yugoslavia that at the time (32 years) was still smarting from its wounds. It makes total sense that a young aspiring Yugo actor (and a Serb) intending to continue his career in that communist country would NOT wish to be remembered playing very convincingly a German and have his real name thrown up in lights. And WHO KNOWS, maybe there was a little "Reichsembelance" in the family tree and not wishing anyone to go and tell Tito "that's Ugo's son" or something. But it is SOLVED, HIS NAME IS IGOR GALO.

Captain Stransky: I'll show you how a Prussian officer can find Lt. Meyer on the internet.

Sergeant Steiner: Then, I'll show you where Igor Galo's career grows.

Thanks, Hellqvist!!

Thanks, guys! I was just as curious myself who played Lt Meyer, as it is a small but important role, and because Meyer came across as very sympathetic. I think most viewers thought it was a shame he died.

I think Cross of Iron is the best movie in the 20th century. This movie symbolizes the 20th century, the century of wars and confrontations that put one extreme to another(as Steiner said).

War is an accident of hands that can kill millions of innocent people. An accident of hands in which we still live... in no man's land...

I used to work for the film festival in Sarajevo and some three years ago I met mr. Galo. He was properly surprised when I told him something like "You should have been more careful about those russian bayonets,Lt. Meyer". His comment was: "I cannot believe somebody still remembers it!". People from ex-Yu remember him by his roles in partisan films, where he usually played dedicated and able teenage resistance member.

Cheers,

It's from the play "Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui" (The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui). Maybe you can find the book in a library.

I remember the last sentence from school:

".....
.....
Der Schoß ist fruchtbar noch aus dem das kroch!" (or so)

Could it be:
Das da hätt' einmal fast die Welt regiert,
Die Völker wurden seiner Herr.
Jedoch ich wollte,
daß ihr nicht schon triumphiert:
Der Schoß ist fruchtbar noch,
aus dem das kroch.

what excatly should the ending have been like or how does the book end...i do say that the ending was quite bad, a bad ending to a brilliant movie, but what should have been the proper ending?

How about this ending in which Steiner and Stransky make a dash at the Soviet human wave?

Steiner: Forward~!!! Prussian coward!

Stransky: I'm the leader~. I'm the leader~.

Steiner: Don't you want the Iron Cross?

Stransky: Lt. Tribig is dead! Colonel Brandt has gone! Steiner went crazy! What am I going to do???

(They dash at Russians, but fell by a bomb explosion near them)

Steiner: (Taking a deep breath) Now I've shown you the Iron Crosses grow.

Stransky: (Also taking a deep breath) Then, give me the Iron Cross.

Steiner: (Throwing his Iron Cross to Stransky) Get up, Stransky! Time has come for us!

(They get up again and dash again at the recklessly advancing Russians...)

THE END
