Hi Navy Vet and all,
In my opinion, Hitler's rise to power is surely pure chance. If it wasn't for the Great Depression Hitler would have never risen to power.
The German people were desperate, they wanted a better standard of living. The Deutschmarkes being worthless (you probably seen pictures of German childern playing with wads of Deutschmarkes as toys! ) because of overinflation and an incompetent government (not to mention the punishing terms of the Treaty of Versailles) they all looked for a leader that can turn around Germany's ailing economy. Then came Hitler, he used the Jewish people as a scapegoat and brought the German industry back on its feet, by creating jobs from producing war material!
BTW, Navy Vet, are you actually a vetern of the Navy or is it just your username?
PS: I don't think the German people really bought Hitler's crazy ideologies, but I guess survival of your own self is much more important than worrying about some other persons problems...

Yes, I served from 95-98 aboard the USS George Washington CVN73. A Nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier with over 80 airships and 5,000 men. Had the enlisted rank as E5. At that time CVN73 (along with the sister ship CVN74) was the largest in the world; however, CVN75 has been commissioned and is now probably the largest.BTW, Navy Vet, are you actually a vetern of the Navy or is it just your username?
AND (to keep this on topic) I totally agree with your PS...
the people were desperate for food and life, even that would make me put faith in a person (or government).
I recently saw a Life Magazine book that contained a photo of a man handing a woman Deutschmarkes to use as confetti at a New Year's Eve celebration at a restaurant in New York City. Very callous.linluz wrote:(you probably seen pictures of German childern playing with wads of Deutschmarkes as toys! )
No, that would be the Pacific fleet. My ship, USS George Washington CVN73, was an Atlantic ship. The fleets would meet in the middle, in the Persian Gulf.
During the Bosnian conflict I was land based in Italy at a Naval Air Station in support of the 6th fleet.
The only "real" action I saw was in 1997 when Sadaam blocked the UN inspectors. We were underway for port in France but had to do 'expeditionary service' and went to the Gulf. It was odd to see the different reactions from the other saliors knowing we were going to hostile waters.
