Best portrait of a german soldier on a movie

Post by Chuck_jm » 30 Aug 2004 17:19

Hi folks, i was thinking which actor has portrayed the best a nazi general, soldier or whatever. Immediatley Peter O'Toole came to my mind.

Who is your pick???
Maybe including pics will help.

P.S. Maybe the worst will be suitable too.

What film is this taken from? I know he played a SS General in Night of the Generals but this is a different film is it not?

I have to say though, one of my favourite classical looking German solider actors is Thomas Kretschmann from Stalingrad, U-571, The Pianist and now Der Untergang! He looks perfect in every respect. Sorry no pics at the moment.

well, the best nazi officer portrait i have ever seen in movies is Untersturmführer Amon Goeth(Commandant of Plaszow Labor Camp) performed by Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List.
the worst one is erwin rommel(professional soldier, not a nazi officer!) performed by Karl Michael Vogler in Patton.
this guy was almost 20 years younger than rommel was in 1940s.
the most interesting german officer was colonel Werner Visser performed by Marcel Iures in Hart's War.A german colonel graduated from Yale, listening to banned jazz music in his office.(He said that they were the only copies in whole germany.but i heard that eva braun was listening to jazz music in berghoff.)

Yes, Ralph Fiennes did great as Amon Goeth, i totally agree.

The part when a jewish architect girl explained him the whole building or whatever they were doing had to be done again and he refused, shot her and then did what she said was great.

I agree Fiennes was awesome, one of the best film performances period I have ever seen. I'd love to see a really good portrayal of Hitler.

I didn't really think Vogler was bad in Patton, sure he didn't look like Rommel but I've never really seen anyone playing him in a movie who does very much, and if he was that much younger than Rommel it didn't show, I didn't think. It's basically just a cameo but IMO he played it pretty decently. I like where he says "you can afford to be an optimist, I can't."

Best portrayal of a German in a war movie was the SS sergeant who joined Kelly's heroes and sold his Tiger I to Oddball.

"Ich hoffe es".

He was scary too.

That's Karl-Otto Alberty, also appeared in The Battle of Britain, The Winds of War, and War and Remembrance, and yes he is very scary, especially in the last two.
