Best War Movie Ever
Re: Best War Movie Ever
Back to the topic...
"Taxi nach Tobruk" (F: "Un Taxi pour Tobrouk...")
1960, France/Spain/Germany:
Wikipedia / German: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_nach_Tobruk
Lino Ventura, Hardy Krüger, Charles Aznavour, another story from the desert war years, enemies become comrades, not very realistic, but quite entertaining, as a fan of Lino Ventura, I had to mention this movie, sorry.

Re: Best War Movie Ever
watched The Unknown Soldier Tuntematon Sotilas again, the 2017 version
[also 1955 & 1985 versions][both excellent as well]
finding it the "best" war film I've ever seen
very accurate in the history, weapons & the dynamics of a platoon
it brought up a lot of emotions, I could say "after the war"
the characters in the film are outstanding & really follow the classic book from 1955
some well done women's roles as well
a few Finnish friends said the retreat in 1944 was not that hysterical
the only complaint I have, with so many films...
is bullets going by you make a noise like someone swinging a stick... they don't
I cannot recomend it enough - there is a well translates/subtitles one,
& a boot-legged Russian one that was so bad I threw it out... heavily censored & quite puritanical
~ would be interested to hear some Finnish views

Good afternoon alpinoinMT,
thank you very much for your mention of some war movies from finland, which unfortunately are all completely unknown to me..?
For sure, I missed one or the other film from finland already years and decades ago,
where can one find more information about all these films, surely there are informative websites on this topic?
Greetings Hans1906

Re: Best War Movie Ever
Good afternoon,
the 1943 american war/propaganda movie Edge of Darkness is excellent, measured against the standards of the time:
Wikipedia (E) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_of_D ... 1943_film)
The movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IcccWUvpnU
Very rarely on German TV, and if so, then only in the middle of the night on a third TV channel, when overtime is...

Re: Best War Movie Ever
I beg your pardon, but judging after the description in Wikipedia, this seems to be just another cheap propaganda movie, Errol Flynn or not.

Re: Best War Movie Ever
Good evening Albert,
as a german, I do not think so, to me, the movie is excellent, a true classic, but like always, all this
depends on ones own taste...
Hans1906
Btw: Wikipedia just as an "refererance"...
P.S. Compared to other so called american "propaganda" movies from the late 1930s, and the 1940s, the movie is a small
gem, and I have watched most of these movies, like the german propaganda stuff from these years...

In the same way that Die Hard was a Christmas movie, the best war movie ever was the Cold War classic Stripes, starring Bill Murray and Harold Ramis.

Good afternoon,
another movie I like to mention is "Kanał", from the year 1956, by the polish director Andrzej Wajda.

Re: Best War Movie Ever
Don't forget Wajda's Katyn. He had to wait 50 years before he could finally make this movie.

Re: Best War Movie Ever
Once again...
I like to mention the war movie "Farewell To The King" from the year 1989.
Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farewell_to_the_King
Good and neat film about the war in the jungle Nick Nolte grandios!
The Movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farewell_to_the_King
A Masterpiece, highly undervalued, I love the soundtrack...

Re: Best War Movie Ever
Just have to agree with your take on both of these excellent movies, enjoyed both of them very much. Sophie Scholl - The Final Days, if you have not seen it, is absolute must viewing. It is an extremely powerful movie and is the kind of film that will linger in your memory for many, many months, and perhaps more importantly, is a film that you will never forget, so powerful are the performances. It certainly ranks near the top of my favorite films.Sejanus wrote: ↑13 Feb 2020, 10:07Since this is a German WWII forum, here are some noteworthy works I have not seen mentioned yet in this tread that are related to the NS period, I found them all to be excellent:
Flame & Citron (some sources indicate this was first released in 2008, others in 2009), about Danish resistance fighters during WWII. Portraying the two resistance fighters the film follows as not necessarily heroic and morally ambiguous gives the film a more realistic approach. Be careful whom you trust!
Sophie Scholl - The Final Days (2005), about the real life Sophie Scholl and the members of the White Rose resistance group shortly prior to and after their arrest by the Gestapo, and what happened next. Among the excellent casting is André Hennicke as the emaciated, nearly frothing-at-the-mouth-gone-berzerk Peoples Court Judge Roland Freisler (acting in just the same haranguing way Friesler behaved in real life judging by newsreel footage produced by the Nazis during numerous trials I have seen, including that of the July 20 plotters).
Re: Best War Movie Ever
That movie is a remake of the original german 1982 film 'Die Weisse Rose', with Lena Stolze as Sophie Scholl.
