your answer is correct.
"Befreiung" (Liberation) is the German title and a lot of the German role-models were played by East-German actors.

I also agree to your general opinion about these Soviet epos. Nevertheless as far as I can remember, 13 years ago I liked these series more than some of these Western garbage war-movies.
