Try the close combat series if you like strategy games with details down to every bullet and soldiers who panic.

Battlefield 1942 is not a good world war two game, it's full of historical errors. Altough it's fun to play it could almost be called revisionist.

What kind of game are you looking for? There are really several kinds, first person shooting games, the old style board type games of Operational Strategy or just tactical game.

Here is my recommnedation for the different ones:

Tactical:

Steel Panthers, can be downloaded for free at http://www.matrixgames.com , or use to be able to. Nothing I have ever played comes close to this one on tactical level.

First Person:

Battlefield 1942, EA Games http://www.battlefield1942.com amazingly addictive game. Really a blast to play.

Grand Strategy or Operational.

There are several, some 10 years old and some recent.

Uncommon Valor: War in the South Pacific, another matrix game, excellent game. Combines all elements of the South Pacific Campaign, Air, Land and Sea warfare. One of the best if not the best around.

The Operation Art of War 1939 - 1955 another good one, really detailed.

War in Russia, wonderful game, although very old. Check out matrix for a free download, SHARP LEARNING CURVE.

Some may pick the Panzer General games, but I always thought they sucked pretty bad, to cartoonish or something with the way it plays. A poor copy of Steel Panthers really.

I found Close Combat serie the best if you're searching for a good and easy-to-play game in real time.
There is also Sudden Strike if you look at this type of game, but i surely prefere Close Combat (CC3 is the best of all, and there are a lot of mods for playing with Finns,Rumanians,italians,etc.. in virtually every front).

About tactics, you can try Battleground Ardennes, really i found it a bit slow.... :aliengray

If you want a 'real wargame' like 'Steel Panters' or 'Close Combat', then an even better choise would be 'Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin'. It is the latest 'state of art' in its kind. Have a look at http://www.battlefront.com and download the demo.

What about "Medal of Honor"? Well, it-s a shooter, not a strategic game, but this is my favourite. I also enjoy playing Panzer Commander (especially when commanding a Tiger in "Wittmann" mission, or a Panther, in "Ernst Barkmann's corner" mission. I also played Panzer II.

Campaign Series: East Front 2, West Front and Rising Sun; Turn based ww2 platoon level combat; 700+ scenarios available plus many campaigns; engagements vary from company engagements to corps!

Best wargame out there, IMHO.

You can download the World in Flames domo version at
http://www.marinacci.com/Chris/

the origin of this game is a classic global strategy level board game of WWII, although it is not nave been finished yet, the game is wonderful and the editor system is also good.
