Request for Identification of k.u.k. Generals and Admirals

#1

Post by Kriegsmarine Großadmiral » 18 Oct 2020, 00:40

I was quite surprised when I saw this section doesn't have the popular "Request for Identification of Generals and Admirals" thread.

I guess "The official AHF Austria-Hungary quiz thread" replaced it here. Nevertheless, I decided to create this thread in hopes we can have a successful thread for identification of k.u.k. Generals and Admirals. I hope the moderators will make this a "sticky" thread. :)

Let me kick off this new thread with a question right away.

On this photo we can see Kaiser Karl I. and Admiral Maximilian Njegovan on board the "Novara". My question is: who is the officer with the white beard in the background? Is it possible it's Admiralstabsarzt Anton Freiherr von Eiselsberg? I can see a resemblance.

No, it´s not Eiselsberg. The man in question is wearing an EK1 which Eiselsberg did not own.

I might be wrong, but I can only see two gold stripes on his cap, making him a Korvettenkapitän, Fregattenkapitän or a Linienschiffskapitän, but not an Admiral.

Does anyone recognize this k.u.k. Linienschiffskapitän? He is stading next to Kapitän zur See Helmuth Brinkmann, then the Commandant of the "Prinz Eugen". The photo was taken in Brest in 1941. I think the k.u.k officer could be the last Commandant of the SMS "Prinz Eugen"?

I think you will find it is Linienschiffskapitän Adolf Schmidt. I don't have any biographical details on him unfortunately.

Thank you Ian! Do you have a photo of him for comparison?

Unfortunately not, but Adolf Schmidt was the last Commanding Officer of the SMS Prinz Eugen,

Hello Karlo and Ian,

the principal decorations fit Adolf Schmidt. He was the holder of the Prussian Iron Cross 2nd class, the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd class with war decoration, the Military Merit Cross 3rd class with war decoration and a bronze military merit medal, all seen here. His decorations have been mounted with some overlapping of the orders and medals but one can just make out the MVK3 overlapping the ÖEK3.

Glenn,

Thank you for your input. My eyes aren't what they used to be and I struggle to see the finer points some times.

Who is the Konteradmiral on the far right with Kaiser Karl and Admiral Njegovan?

This Officer has perplexed me for some time as I have been unable to identify either. One possible candidate is Vizeadmiral Karl von Seidensacher.
