This was Austria-Hungary's only war prior to WWI other than their 54-man participation in the Boxer Rebellion.

Haji Loja the leader of muslim resistance againts austrians was taken prisoner

Hadži Lojo (or Hadschi Loja in German sources) was a nickname.

His real name was Salih Vilajetović (1834-1887).

He was born in Bardakčije, a residential neighbourhood in Sarajevo. His family owned house and property in Bjelave neighbourhood.

His father Abdulah was a muallim. It means teacher in English. His mother's name was Hanka.

Salih Vilajetović publicly opposed plans to build an Orthodox Church in Sarajevo.

Subsequently, he completed Hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca, thereafter he got title Hadži. He acquired nickname Lojo after a fight with captured bear, for fun, in which he won.

Before 1878 uprising, he was selling tobacco and holding lectures in a mekteb (elementary school). So, he was literate.


His brother Mustafa died in 1878, in the struggle against Austria-Hungary.

Hadži Lojo wounded himself from his rifle during the uprising in 1878, due to his negligence.

Once he was captured by Austro-Hungarians, military doctor had to amputate his leg due to the old wound mentioned.


Salih Vilajetović died in Mecca in 1887.

His wife's name was Fatima. Their children's names were: Mustafa, Muhamed and Aiša.
