Post by JerseyGary » 06 Oct 2007, 04:46

I need a little help with the colours of collar patches used in the Polish Legions, 1914-1916. This is what I have already, which may or not be correct:

1st Infantry Brigade: Red
2nd Infantry Brigade: Green
3rd Infantry Brigade: Blue?
4th Infantry Brigade: ?
5th Infantry Brigade: ?

1st Lancers: Crimson
2nd Lancers: Amaranth

Artillery: Black

Medical: White

Police: Yellow?

Telegraph/Communications: ?

Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it!

Ahoj!
There were only three brigades, so no need to worry with no.4 and above :)
Do you read Polish?

Czesz Borys,

Thanks for the reply. I read that there were a 4th and 5th Legion later on in the war although I never saw any photographs of them. Well that makes my job simpler if that is not true.

I don't read Polish well, but fortunately my girlfriend is from Kutno and is kind enough to translate for me.

Thanks again for the reply.

Ahoj!
Hmmm - this is just a hypothesis, mind you. In 1919/20 when the Polish Army was created, the Infantry Divisions 1-3 had the honorific "Legionów", "of the Legions". As Polish Divisions were square, these Divisions had 6 Brigades, so there were Brigades nos. 4, 5 and 6 of the Legions.

BTW - I googled in Polish for collar patches of the Legions and nothing came screaming at me "this is it!".
Suggest to girlfriend to use the word "patki", i.e. "patches".

Maybe she could ask the guys here:
