Here's a neat picture of Austro-Hungarian POWs in 1915. It was taken by Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii, a Russian pioneer in color photography.

nice photos! Are those the "hand-tinted" variety or are they actual color photos from the 1910s?

That's real. He used a 3 plate exposure process. When they were combined, the result was full color.

When the Russian Revolution broke out, he was in the process of making a full-color photo survey of Russia at the request of the Czar. It wasn't completed, but what WAS completed, and what we still have, really bring the old Russian Empire to life.

I remember that you posted those over at the (currently dead) mil hist forums. It's an excellent find- I'll remember to save it this time!

Here's a link to a collection of nearly 2000 of his pictures. If you like the one, you'll LOVE the many!

Those are nice but theyre too small :( Even the blown up ones dont compare with the greatness of the one up top.

Great link, Galahad.. thanks! I agree though that they are unfortunately a bit small.

Are there any color photos of other parts of Europe (Germany, France) as they were before WWI?

(sorry if this topic is slightly dead and I'm reviving it)

Any photos in color or otherwise of the Hinterpommern region in 1910s? Particularly in the area around Kolberg and Belgard.

Just discovered this forum and this photo. It's a very interesting picture to me as my grandfather was in the Hungarian Honved and was captured by the Russians at the beginning of the war, spending several years as a POW in Siberia.

I'd like to know if any details are available on this picture - where and when taken? Any other photos of AH POW's by this photographer and if so, where are they accessible?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris Michaelis
