I just want to know if this island chain north of the Barents Sea and currently Russianterritory ever belonged to Austroa-Hungary, before its collapse. It is called Franz Josef Land, after all.

hi Phil,

I don't think Franz Josefs Land was ever claimed by Austria-Hungary.

But it was discovered by the

Payer-Weyprecht Austro Hungarian Polar expedition in the 1870s(?)

The leaders were Austrian military officers

The exp. advanced farther North(closer to the North Pole)

than anyone had before.

Around 82 Degrees North I believe

I think their ship was called 'Novara'

---now I have to check this out on google!

Hi everyone, peter you are right
franz josef land was discovered by some austrian discoverer

no, austrian never claimed this land, and i think russia isn't so proud possessing it.
It's not more than a big ice floe! (May for Sibirians a summer camp? )
