Of special note, Linienschiffsleutnant Gottfried Freiherr von Banfield was the only airman of A-H to receive his country’s highest military honor. On 17 August 1917, he was presented the Knight’s Cross of the Military Maria Theresia Order during the 180th “Promotion” to the ranks of the order.

Uniquely, admission to the order was upon invitation whereby the proposed recipient had to make application himself! The highest scoring ace of A-H, Hauptmann Godwin Brumowski, was invited by Generaloberst Archduke Josef Ferdinand, the Inspector General of the Army Air Service, to apply for admission into the order. Per Dr. O'Connor, Brumowski replied:

If I have earned this award by my service, then it should be cause enough for the Commander-in-Chief to present it to me. It is not my duty to ask or demand it.

As history records, Hauptmann Brumowski never received his country's highest military award.

Shawn

Hauptmann,

If you are still interested, check at http://www.theaerodrome.com
That is the ultimate WWI aviation site, and there you will find a list (and short biographies, with awards and dates information) for avery major nation who fought in WWI.

Regards,

Douglas.

The interesting fact about Godwin Brumowski is that he was born in the same little town that Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) was born, it is the town of Wadowice. I am wondering if our Polish members here know that fact.
