Hello Glenn,
Another "guess" I'm afraid, but this time he was born in 1837!
Ernst Graf Fünfkirchen? Graf is Deutsch for Count and his name sounds very German. Unfortunately, my German is not good enough to interpret his name other than funf which is "5" in English. So he is probably German and comes from the "nobility" In actual fact it could not be him, as the picture you posted looks like a considerably older person and Funfkirchen died at 34 if I remember correctly.

we got there in the end Generalfeldmarschall Prinz Albrecht von Preußen, the Inhaber of Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 6 from 1889 until his death in 1906.

The officer in question was a Field Marshal born in 1788.

Heinrich Hermann Josef Freiherr von Hess (1788 - 1870), Austrian soldier, entered the army in 1805. He became field-marshal in 1860, and a year later, on resigning his position as chief-of-staff, he was made captain of the Trabant guard. He died in Vienna in 1870.
