An additional clue to yesterday's posting: he was Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Hungarian Army in 1916-1917.

Hi AJK,

Not my area of expertise but based on the information provided my guess would be Gustav (or Gusztav) Schay, and the few photos of him I have been able find looks a bit like the one you have posted. If I am correct please feel free to post another - I only joined for the fun of finding the officer at hand, and I don't have enough AH knowledge to post a new question.
Kind Regards

Hi Steen,

You are correct, it is indeed General der Infanterie (mit Titel und Charakter) Gustav Schay. Here is another officer with Hungarian ties, born 19 December 1860, died 26 March 1945.

In 1905, when Wilhelm Freiherr von Bothmer retired, the wanted general took over this position and remained there until his retirement in 1917.
GM Franz Kriszt became his successor.

Paulus,

I think (90% certain) it is Siegmund Bacsak von Benefa, but I have a different date of death (21.04.1920) so that is why I am not sure.

Ian

Ian,

you are right - twice
It is Generalremontierungsinspektor Siegmund Bacsák von Benefa (Zsigmond Bacsák de Benefa)
Image: Moderne illustrierte Zeitung für Reise und Sport Heft 10/11 1914, pg. 26
(anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno-plus?aid=miz&datum=1914&page=825&size=45)

The date of death 01.08.1922 is from Antonio Schmidt-Brentano - and it's wrong - sorry

The date April 21, 1920 can be found in the "Wiener Landwirtschaftliche Zeitung" on May 8, 1920
(anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno?aid=wlz&date=19200508&query=%22Bacs%c3%a1k%22&ref=anno-search&seite=7)

and is (partly) repeated in the edition of December 25th, 1920.
(anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno?aid=wlz&date=19201225&query=%22Bacs%c3%a1k%22&ref=anno-search&seite=6)

it's your turn

regards,
paulus
