Slovene Officers in the Austro-Hungarian Military

Post by Orok » 06 Apr 2004 16:51

Hi all,

I just read Klemen's translation of an article on Baron Vega, the great Slovene soldier and scientist, and a winner of the MMThO.

This makes me wonder if there are other famous slovenes in the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian military. I am especially interested to know if any high-ranking army officers during the First World War were Slovene. We all see a lot of Serbs and Croats and some Poles, besides the ubiquitous Germans and Magyars, but I am not sure if there are any Slovenes.

Thank you and Best Regards!

Thanks Klemen,

Great information!

Any others? Not necessarily in a rank as high as generals/admirals. Any Obersts commanding regiment or brigade?

Any additional info is welcome.

And any pictures/photographs would be a plus!

Best Regards!

So far I can help you "just" with a list of Slovene Gen./Adm. serving for Austria.

For more info you should contact other Klemen - Klemen L. - he has more knowledge on this.

Klemen,

Reading through your list it suddenly occurred to me that the Austrian born Third Reich celebrity Odilo Globocnik and the last Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schussnigg might be of Slovenian origin and heritage, judging from their surnames. Can you or anyone confirm this?

Best regards!

Odilo Globočnik was born in Trst (Trieste), his grandfather was professor in Ljubljana.

Other "Slovene" Gen. in Wehrmacht was Mickl (Mikl), Johann (Ivan), Gen.Maj., CO of 392. Inf.Div. ("Plave"); his family came from Radgona.

Thanks Klemen,

How about Schussnigg, isn't his name ending with a -nik, perhaps something like Šusnik?

Best Regards!

Hi Orok:

I'm not trying to be picky, but what exactly is a "Serbo-Croat"? The Croats and the Serbs are two distinct nations - as distinct as the Slovenes.

Klemen,

Thanks for the great list. can you do us one more favor by giving the German equivalent of the I guess Slovenian ranks, like Untermarschal, Podmarschal, etc.

Thanks again!

Yes, but I don't have any info on him.

But Caprivi (Kopriva) Georg Leo, 1831-1899 Graf, Gen.Maj. and Chieff of Staff of Corps; Prime minister of Prussia and Second German Chancellor was of Slovene origin; his family came from Koprivnik, Kočevski Rog.

BTW. Kopriva is Slovene word for nettle.

Klemen
