Gen.Maj. (later SA-Ogruf.) Robert Emil Riegel

Post by Michael Miller » 12 Apr 2004, 18:44

Seeking k.u.k. and österr. Bundesheer career information on future SA-Obergruppenfüher Robert Emil Riegel (1872 - 1951) who commanded k.u.k. Inf.Rgt. 1 and eventually rose to the rank of Generalmajor (in the Bundesheer?).

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Mike,

Robert Riegel did not command k.u.k. Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 1 but the post war Bundesheer Infanterieregiment Niederösterreich Nr 1 from 1st August 1923 to 31st August 1924. He then retired as a Titular Generalmajor.

Oberleutnant: 1 Nov 1898
Hauptmann: 1 May 1909
Major: 1 Nov 1915
Oberstleutnant: 1 Feb 1918

It would appear that he served with Infantry Regiment 69 from at least 1901 until the end or WW1 although he is shown as supernumery to the Luftstreitkräfte in the 1916 and 1918 Army Lists.

Awards as at 1918:

Military Merit Cross 3rd Class with War Decoration and Swords
Bronze Military Merit Medal with Swords
Bronze Military Merit Medal
Karl Troop Cross
Crown Jubilee Medal of 1898
Crown Jubilee Cross of 1908
Bosnian-Herzegovian Commemoration Medal

His Bronze Military Medal on the Ribbon of the Military Merit Cross was gazetted in PVLB 4/15.

Regards
Glenn

Questions re: Awards

Glenn~

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the full text for the abbreviation "PVLB"?
And does that gazetting date apply to the Bronze Military Merit Medal with Swords, or just the Bronze Military Merit Medal (presumably without Swords)?

Thanks in advance,
~ Mike

Hi Mike,

sorry, I should have been more clear. Personal-Verordnungsblatt. It refers to the Bronze Military Merit Medal with Swords.

Regards
Glenn

Have attempted to render those awards in German (for use in my biography of Riegl which will appear in Leaders of the SA, NSKK, and NSFK, Volume I [Stabschef & Korpsführer / Obergruppenführer / Gruppenführer]). Hope I got them right:

Militärverdienstkreuz III.Klasse mit Kriegsdekoration und Schwertern
Militär-Verdienstmedaille in Bronze mit Schwertern [am Band für Militärverdienstkreuz?]
Militär-Verdienstmedaille in Bronze
Karl-Truppenkreuz
Jubiläums-Medaille 1898
Jubiläums-Medaille 1908
bosnisch-herzegowinische Erinnerungsmedaille 1909

Best,
~ Mike

Medals

Post by Glenn2438 » 12 Apr 2004, 21:30

Hi Mike,

The full titles from the Ranglisten

Militärverdienstkreuz 3. Klasse mit Kriegsdekoration und Schwertern
Bronzene Militärverdienstmedaille am Bande des Militärverdienstkreuzes
Bronzene Militärverdienstmedaille am roten Bande
Karl-Truppenkreuz
Jubiläumserinnerungsmedaille für die bewaffnete Macht 1898
Militärjubiläumskreuz 1908

And my mistake: He did not have the B-H 1909 but the 1912/13 Commemorative Cross - Erinnerungskreuz 1912-1913

Regards
Glenn
