Hi Sturm78,

You are right. I misidentified the gun. It is indeed a 14 cm (138.6 mm) Mle 1910. I corrected my notes long time ago but did not correct it here.

Seven (7) of these French guns were captured by the Germans at Verdun between the 23rd and 26th February 1916 including at La Vauche, Bois de Le Fay and Bois d'Herméville. The 2nd picture with all the visible logs could have been taken at Bois d'Herméville.

Yes, I think it is the barrel of a 155 mm Long Mle 1877-1914 from Schneider. It looks very similar to the Mle 1877 or 1877-1916 but it does not feature the large handle above the barrel and the trunnions on the side for rotation.

Here is a drawing of the barrel-carrying trailer for the Mle 1877-14 gun from a French 1922 book. It is in traveling position. The small wheels seem to have been moved back compared to their position on your picture.

Close - it's a British 9.45in "Flying Pig" Mortar. The British mortar was a copy of the French 240mm Dumezil-Batignolles Mortar.

The image with the Kaiser inspecting captured British equipment was turned into a postcard.

Charlie

Re #761 Post by Sturm78 » 04 Feb 2021 21:37 I would say that this is a . Source: Die Entwicklung des Granatwerfer im Ersten Weltkrieg, Tillmann Reibert, Hamburg 2003.
