When maritime traffic went underwater.

The sea route across the Atlantic was blocked, so Norddeutscher Lloyd built a submarine during World War I. The incredible story of the submarine cargo ship "Deutschland". This resulted in the creation in November 1915 of a consortium led by Norddeutscher Lloyd and the Deutsche Bank called Deutsche Ozean-Reederei GmbH. Under the biggest secret, the Germaniawerft shipyard in Kiel built a "submarine cargo ship", which was launched on March 28, 1916. It was the first of six planned ships, 65 meters long and, almost nine meters wide, significantly more bulky than military submarines.

UC-74 in Barcelona 1918.

In command of Oberleutnant z. See Hans Schüler made the last German war cruiser in the Mediterranean. He layed mines the entrance of the Suez Canal and on November 2, 1918 sank 2 freighters of a convoy. With little fuel and without the availability of the Austro-Hungarian bases, he decided to surrender in Barcelona on Thursday, November 21, ten days after the signing of the armistice. After touching the dock of La Paz and contacting the Navy Command, he was taken to the Morrot dock. He was anchored between the gunship "Don Álvaro de Bazán" and the torpedo boat Nº5. His ammunition was deposited in the city's Artillery Park. On November 23, most of the crew was sent to Alcalá de Henares.

IIRC a Spanish submarine interned in Spain made a getaway earlier in the war so the Spaniards were more careful thereafter ensuring they could not get to sea again after the combatant port time limit had expired

U Boat in WWI - U 43.

Commissioned on April 30, 1915. Throughout her operational life it carried out 11 patrols, sinking 45 ships with a total of 114,323 tons. 2 ships taken as prize with a total of 356 tons. Fate November 20, 1918 - Surrendered. Broken up in Swansea in 1922.

I will write my question here to avoid opening a new topic. I was wondering if someone could recommend me a book on German U boat operations during the First World War. There are plenty of books about the Second, but not so many about the First. Books on operations by other countries would also be appreciated.

The German Submarine War, 1914-1918 by Gibson and Prendergast. 1931 and reprinted since. My favorite.
German Submarines and Their Warfare 1914-1918, Albert Gayer. 1920 and reprinted since. Excellent operations coverage thru early 1917. 1917-1918 is based on a lecture he did as there was no final book. Gayer was a flotilla commander and the work has much inner detail.
Submarinos alemanes en la Gran Guerra by Cristino Castroviejo Vicente. 2004. An excellent work. It is in Spanish. I am presuming you are Spanish lingual based on your screen name. Pardon if no.

The official German history of the WWI U-Boat war was published in multiple volumes (at least three) as Der Handelskrieg mit U-Booten

There are English translations of the first two volumes to be found on Internet Archive
