Post by Mike K. » 07 Mar 2003 06:21

What were some of the campaigns fought in the Middle East? How involved were German forces?

Mike,
The Australian Light Horse fought a German force near Jericho in 1918.
A book I've got says it was three battalions of German infantry, the 702nd,703rd and 11th Jagers against the 1st Light Horse Brigade. The battle was called Abu Tellul and occured on the 13 July 1918.

The Germans attacked and were repulsed with 105 killed,358 prisoners. The Australians lost 23 dead,46 wounded.

Something aside---a Turkish Helmet based on the German version was developed and produced in 1918 by Germany. It was the standard German version without a front visor, adapted for Muslim users to pray.
These stocks never reach the Turks in time. Here's Freikorps members wearing these Turkish Helmets in Berlin 1919.
