I was wondering how many people were killed in WWI from the use of chemical agents, be it Mustard Gas or something else.
What were the symptoms of being gassed? I remember that Hitler was blinded temporarily from gas, so blindness (permanent or otherwise) was one symptom. Did this kill an individual by asphyxiation? I read at the Battle of Verdun that many sodiers were hiding in underground bunkers when the gas was used, making the bunkers one large tomb.

My grandfather was gassed during the Belleu Wood Campaign by the Germans. In perfect health before the war he worked as a fireman in New York City. Afterwards, he couldnt hold a job for the rest of his life with any regularity because he developed emphsema(spelling) which caused acute shortness of breath and inability to walk great distances. He died in 1963 as a result of this affliction. It took 50 years for the cumalative effects to get him. Wonder how many others suffered such an end in their old age which was cut short by about 15 years.
