Good view of the standard water drum which was eventually replaced by the 'ammo can look alike'.

Really interesting picture....I don't think I've ever noticed the "shield" over the water-jacket before, as photographed....interesting view and I learnt something I didn't know....thanks!

The belt is certainly correct in the pic of the camouflage 08, so I am curious why it is considered incorrect? The belts were made with both three and five loops between extended fingers and this one is a five loop pattern.
The pic is clearly staged given the empty and loose rounds, etc. and possibly by allied soldiers.
Nice to see your pics here, Mark.

Hello Mark.
Yes your eyes are wacked :D secondly I don't have the necessary photoshop skills and thirdly this is one of mine just to kill some time in the back garden. I have some other views of this but it was primarily to identify this bipod mounting.
Bob has also educated me as I am now aware that 3 and 5 spacer belts were used by the Germans in WWI. Finally whilst digging through my manuals here are some interesting diagrams.

Gun crew details are sparse, but the uniform on the man in the center might be a M1910 Waffenrock with the top collar hooks not fastened (there does appear to be some kind of colored piping on the collar edge). The dark color underneath the tunic looks like the cloth neck protector worn with the M1910 tunics. The gunner's right hand appears to show the buttoned cuff of a M1910 Waffenrock as well. The hand holding the ammo belt does look a bit like a US soldier in shirtsleeve order, but it could also be just the angle of the cuff of a M1910 tunic. There just is not enough detail to know for sure. To John G.'s point, I have seen a number of German camouflaged items in European museums, and have not seen this splotch pattern before. I have seen this pattern on French items, especially helmets. Coincidence? I do love the photos of the large gun shields. Wish I had a photo of one. Neat! MHJ
