MG 08
Re: MG 08
Mark, managed to buy this ammo box the other day. No markings. One side has an internal zinc lining. Is this a MG08 ammunition box or a Schwarzlose? Can you confirm? BTW, very much enjoyed seeing the MG08 pictures in this section.

Re: MG 08
For me German. Most Austrian boxes I have seen have an extra steel banding around the box. Look at the latches for markings, any ink stamps on the inside of the lid, and look closely on the wood...sometimes a stamp. The recess where the handle is good.

Superb view of the standard trench mount and the cheerful chap cleaning the lock mechanism.

Re: MG 08
Another thing that seems strange -- the soldiers are wearing their helmets in an obviously casual situation. The German soldiers were almost universal in wearing a "mutz" (cap) when not in combat situations -- and even sometimes when they were! Case in point, the headgear in the photo of the MG08 being cleaned in the trench.MG1918 wrote:Attrition if you have time, look at the postings of machine gunners before this 'genuine/fake' photo - yes puttees were widely used. I guess as an economic measure due to leathe shortages but also for mobility. Many of the 1918 'storm troopers' seem to have favoured ankle boots and puttees. Hopefully a uniform expert will tell us when the Imperial German Army introduced puttees.

Question regarding MG tripod mount / carriages
I know the officially and standard tripods for MG´s 99 to 08:
Tripod Carriage (Dreibeinlafette) 16 http://www.premium-militaria.de/images/w9.jpg
Mountain Carriage (Gebirgslafette) http://www.mg08.de/Photogallerie/08geb3fuss.jpg
But there are clear differences to the following two samples:

If these are standard triple mountings and there was an official designation for it?

Re: MG 08
Holger a great question! There is one thing that is clear, there were indeed many many variations before WWI and during. With Private and commercial contract manufacturers, many nations using the maxim, field adaption, service differences and even tripods put together with different parts by armourers!! So although there may be some literature out there, probably a German service manual in the beautiful gothic style scriot, I have yet to see.
