The funniest image I've ever seen regarding the first world war portrays German officers lampooning the french. They created a 'tin can' french soldier with cigars, mustache. They've written on him french quotes like "merde" and some stuff about him whinning about the girl he's left behind. I found it encredibly funny.

It was taken the day the war was declared on Germany's side. The soldiers were just heading to the front.

Looking at those first couple of photos, I couldn't help but think what a liability it would have been to be seven feet tall fighting in the trenches. :|

Two more: A Russian soldier, proud of his gas mask, and a frosty German field cook. (Both images found on ebay.)

Sorry, no pics, but two comments:

Peter (you probably know this); those shoes are probably wooden shoes, which are great in the wet, hence the Dutch (once) clomping about in their soggy country.

When I collected and looked for pictures and PCs, I was always tickled by the German rat-hunting PCs. The best I saw was about eight Landsern armed with shovels, etc. surrounding an area about 8' by 10' covered with about 100 or so rats, each hanging from a little noose about its neck. In the front, there is a soldier with an amazingly stupid-looking face, holding, by the tail, three to a hand, six giant rats the size of obese cats on steroids. (We all know what they were feasting on.)

The printed caption was: "No meat shortage here!" This was a commercial, printed PC, not a photo card with something scribbled on. Amazing, esp. considering in contrast the way the Brits often controlled the mail to death. The Germans also passed along and delivered PCs with full, clear, and often multiple full frontal nudity, or half a dozen guys on a plank taking a poop.

I wonder if they had just started or completed a school. The cone on the guy on the left is something that was given to German school children after their first day of school. Given the animation of the picture (somewhat rare for pictures of that era) and the subjects jolly mood, it looks like they were definitely having a good day.
