Hawaiian Japanese in US Army 1917?

I have a Dec. 1917 citation of a regiment with "young Hawaiian Japanese who have enlisted in the U.S Army." Context--a Japanese Diplomat returning from Washington stopped over in Hawaii and reviewed the regiment. Article also mentions Japan dispatching the cruiser Tokiwa as guard as US Navy turns attention to war with Germany. Anyone? Many thanks in advance.
