The Allies used rockets fired from biplane fighters to destroy German observations balloon during WWI. They did it with success. The Germans tried to copy the Allies in using this method against Allied observation balloons. The Germans tried but met with failure I believe. But I know the Germans used rockets fired from airplanes for ground attacks during WWI which was little known to most people today. I got the information from theaerodrome.com forum.

Re: German Tried To Use Primitive Rockets Against Allied Balloons
08.07.1917-Aerostat of the 2nd Observation Station of the Revel Naval Fortress of the Emperor Peter the Great was destroyed while on the ground by rockets fired from on enemy aircraft. The unit served with the 12th Army 43rd Army Corps on the Northern Front. Note: Probably near Sturin south of Riga, caused by Fl.Abt.37 Jagdeinsitzer Kommando pilot Ltn.dR. Karl Gallwitz on a Roland D.II. Source: page 237 of "The Russian Military Air Fleet In World War I" (Chronology of Russian,French, and Romanian Losses). So the Germans used aircraft equipped with rockets against observation balloons as well. Aerostat mean observation balloon.
