I´m looking for information about a russian pilot and several mechanics who served under the red finns during the finnish civil war of 1918.
Originally they belogned to the 5th socialist aviation detachment that was part of Petrograd military district.
They arrived with three Nieuport aircraft (10 and 21) to Kouvola Finland at 25th feb 1918 and became ´aviation detachment of central front´ for red army. They stayed in Kouvola area until end of april flying a small number of recon and bombing sorties.
As the general situation in war turned bad for the reds the russian personnel burned their aircraft and were evacuated to Petrograd from the finnish port town of Kotka on 1st may 1918. The ship that carried them to Russia was named Roksana. And that´s where my knowledge of them ends.
Pilot:
- Ivan Jefimov
Mechanics:
- Vasili Sablikov
- Jan Simburisky
- Stephan Thikomolov
- Ivan Anthomov
- Matfei Karpov
There might have been an another pilot and 1-2 additional mechanics in the detachment from the beginning of april 1918 but I don´t know their names.
The leader of the detacment was a finnish WW1 veteran Kaarlo Vilho Roine (he may have used a pseudonym Niilo Roine too). He served in automobile unit and there is a picture of him that has been shot in town of Stryi in modern day Ukraine around 1914-1915. I´ve been unable to locate his service record.
So if anyone has anything about these men after arriving back to Petrograd please let me know. Or about their service before coming to Finland. Or about Kaarlo Vilho (Niilo) Roine´s service in imperial army.
Could someone who can read/write russian chack if any of these men can be found from the achieve mentioned in the previous posting?
