Sources for the end of the 1916 Battle of Verdun

Post by Attrition » 16 Dec 2022 16:24

Someone is questioning 18 December as the end date for the 1916 battle. Can anyone suggest sources for this? Thanks.

That figure is quoted in Wikipedia as the last day of battle in the Second Offensive Battle of Verdun (2ième Bataille Offensive de Verdun) Wikipedia references Wynne "If Germany Attacks: The Battle in Depth in the West"(1939) and Petain "Verdun (1930)

Les armées françaises dans la Grande guerre. Tome IV. 4,3 / Ministère de la guerre, état-major de l'armée, service historique p485 covers the aftermath of the attack on 15th December. I am not a French scholar, but the section headed "Installation sur les Lignes Nouvelles" starts with the sentence. "La Nuit du 16 au 17 decembre est relativement calme." This supports the idea that the 16th is the end of the battle of Verdun 1916.
