Overview of German troops in the East after the Armistice on 11 November 1918

Post by Von Bock » 14 Feb 2023 15:11

World War I did not end on November 11th, 1918. German troops stayed in the occupied countries (Baltics and Ukraine) for a longer time. That is actually what my question is about. I personally get more and more interested in the Eastern Front of World War I, but I don't have a very good overview of the last year. So a couple of questions:

1. How many occupation troops were sent to the East after the Treaty of Brest Litovsk? And how many withdrawn for the Spring Offensive in the West?
2. Until what date were these troops allowed to stay in the occupied countries? I have read that troops from the Caucasus arrived back in Germany in April 1919, more than half a year after the Armistice.
3. How many of these troops were involved in the battle for the Baltics in 1919? I have heard about Freikorpsen and German involvement in the wars of independence in Latvia and Estonia but many details remain unclear.
4. Any good literature about this important part of World history that remains unknown for the general public?

I hope that there are some people here who can provide me with new information about the fate of the 'Ostheer' in World War I.
In the entirety of WWII, Germany never lost a major battle they should have won and they won many battles they should have lost.

Strictly speaking most German forces which left the Eastern Front did it before the treaty of Brest. The number of division in the east decreased from about 80 in the autumn of 1917 to circa 50 by February 1918 and then to 30 something after the Brest treaty. They were augmented by Austro-Hungarian troops. I don't know where the detailed OOB or timeline of withdrawal to Germany can be found.

Der Weltkrieg 1914 bis 1918 has 9 pages of unit movements between fronts from 1.7.17 to 11.11.18
