Spanish exiles.

Hello to all :D; a query about it ..................................

Spanish exiles 1936.

As far as I know for almost three years, between 1936 and 1939, the Spanish Civil War forced thousands of people to flee the country to save their lives. The first important emigrations were made from the Basque Country, Santander and Asturias in 1937. These regions had been isolated to the North of the Peninsula. On that occasion, Great Britain evacuated 160,000 people among: men who were not of fighting age, women and children. They were transferred to France, from where the French government sent them to the republican zone on the border with Catalonia. However for fear of war many did not want to return to Spain, but as France was not willing to have so many refugees a few managed to get away from the catastrophe marching to Latin America ........

However, here my doubt, most of the information is related to exiles pushed by the national advance ............. but were there exiles due to the Republican actions at the beginning of the war? On the web I found an auction of an album by a member of the Panzerschiff Deutschland with images of refugees and one of them indicating that they were taken to Italy ...............................

There are a missconception about that all spanish emigrees and refugees are due the Franco persecution.
In fact the spanish republic, produced thousands of exiless due confiscation, persecution, y other kind of unfair treatment.
I have a real case obout this , from a now , long time deceased couple, who owned a Bakery y Borriana town, not far south of Castellon in Valencia, the war front was some how erratic in that town, sometimes in morning the reds were controlling the streets, some time the nationalists, and that couple personally tell me years ago, the recived better treatment by nacionalitsts than the reds. The reds use to looting the bakery, the nationalist commander forbide His troops to do so, the couple emigree before the town was totally taked by nationalists.

From 1939 a large number were confined, or sheltered, in camps near Vernet France. This was supposed to be a temporary arrignement until they could obtain Visas for immigration elsewhere, or return to Spain. When the Germans arrived in 1940 many of the internees had bee unable to leave. The Germans examined the camps population throughly and arraigned for some of the persons wanted by the Franco government to be transported back to Spain. Others the German felt should be removed to Germany for disposition there. Jews and Communists IIRC. The remainder were left for Petains government to deal with. From September 1939 many others than Spanish refugees were confined to the Vernet camp. German nationals unable or unwilling to return to German at the start of the war were sent there. Ironically most of these people were enemies of the nazis, but the French treated them with extreme caution and interned them anyway. French records show foreigners of 58 nationalities were confined at Vernet from 1939 thru 1944 when the Free French government took custody of the site.

The King arrived in London 7. June 1940 and worked with the Exile government who had been established in London in May 1940. From London The King and CP Olav led the resistance, and the King gave speaches on the radio to keep ut the spirit of the Norwegian people. These speaches became very important to the Norwegians.

There is a case, in Venezuela. A true criminal war red, who left spain after Franco won the war.
This guy named Poncela, a true precursosr of Mengele selection methods, he with his finger select prisioners in central, spain prisons under reds rule, and he selected inmates to be killed Paracuellos de Jarama, and interred in mass graves.
He somehow travel,to Rec Dominca, and latter to Venezuela as distinguisehd proffesor of literatures and live happy for the rest of his life.
