Hi Georg,

thank You very much for this excellent pics! Really great, especially the exclusive Mercedes car, a "Großer Mercedes" type 770 pullman-limousine.
Also very interesting the truck: a VOMAG type 5 LR 448.

Best regards

Bert

Hi,

here another car of the Legion Condor: also a Horch 830 BL.
Interesting the license plate with "L" and "C" for Legion Condor and a skull in the middle.
(source of the pic: "Handbuch Deutsche Kfz-Kennzeichen" by Andreas Herzfeld).

Hi Bert,
Yes, that's a very interesting plate. Perhaps it was a senior officer's car. Von Thoma used a similar skull without the LC on his personal Horch 830 R.:

Hi Max,

thanks a lot for this great pic. Here another pic out of the book: "Handbuch Deutsche Kfz-Kennzeichen" by Andreas Herzfeld:
two "leichte Einheits-PKWs" also with only the skull on the plates.

Best regards

Bert

Thanks Bert,
So obviously my theory is invalid. I just took a look through "German Military Vehicles in the Spanish Civil War" by José Maria Mata et al. and found several other examples of this type plate. It is evident that the traditional Totenkopf was the symbol of the Panzergruppe Drohne and their soft skin vehicles, at least some of them, bore this plate.
Cheers,
Max

Hi Max,

thank You very much for this info.
Here two pics with the normal license plates of Legion Condor vehicles, also out of the book: "Handbuch Deutsche Kfz-Kennzeichen" by Andreas Herzfeld.
The first car could be a Wanderer type W 11, the second car could be a Mercedes-Benz type 200 cabriolet.

Best regards

Bert
