The nasty war in Morocco, involving Spain and France against the Rifs, must have had some influence on Nationalist forces. Can anyone comment?

I feel that RIF war had the follwing influences

1. RIF war facilitated the organization of Right Wing Spainards. Spanish Foreign legion formed to fight in RIF. Franco was instrumental in its founding and led several units. These units attracted many (mostly?) Spanish volunteers (right wing) as well as foreigners. These volunteers then meet and share ideas with other future Nationalist supporters.

2. Morocco during and after RIF war also served as a banishing ground for officers deemed to be potential right wing trouble makers. Unfortunatly for Republicans, it just put them in easy contact with other Right wingers already there.

3. RIF war allowed for the future employment of thousands of Morrocans in Spain on the Nationalist side. Many of these Morrocans were probably serving out of personal loyalty to Franco and other Nationalist officers from RIF war

4. RIF war allowed right wingers who later became Nationalists to gain combat experience in a nasty, irregular style war. Many of these conditions were later duplicated in Spain.

Thanks Deterence.

The war's affects,a view by Robert Asprey:

The military struggle in Morocco left Spain exhausted, sick in mind and spirit,a giant, disjointed body increasingly prone to disastrous factionalism and internal strife.
Rivera's attempts to repair political and economic deficiencies proved fruitless. With dissolution of his dictatorship(also caused by the war),in January 1930,a power vacumn developed.King Alfonso's failure to fill it led to his self-imposed exile in 1931 and to the ill-fated Second Republic, with its equally ill-fated liberal constitution. This was part of the price of 'victory' in Morocco. It would result in catastrophic civil war in less than five years.

Hi to everybody,

I think you are mistaken.

The Rif war was a war that anyone wished in Spain. North of Morocco was assigned to Spain, to avoid that Germany colonished these lands.

This war caused in Spain a lot of Revolts because most of soldiers were conscripts, (many of them had wife and sons), the Spanish Army had no equipments and thousands died there, ex,Annual 1921, where the Moroccan bandits leaded by Abd-el-Krim (They were not soldiers) executed abou 20000 spanish soldiers who had been defeated.

This war finished in 1925 by a French-Spanish disembark in Alhucemas, where Abd-el-Krim was defeated.

This war wasn´t a premeditate training for the Spanish Army, but it´s true that most of Spanish officcials in Spanish Civil War (both Republican and Nationalist) were veterans of this war.

Regards from Spain

i read in the book, "betrothed of death" that when a spanish noble women, who was a high ranking member of the spanish red cross, came to visit the spanish foreign legion, the legionn had a special gift for her. a basket filled with the heads of moorish RIF fighters decorated with roses.

neither spanish nor moorish side in the RIF war were known for showing much in the way of mercy toward each other.

at one point during a joint operation between the spanish legion and regular spanish troops, some legion soldiers started shooting moorish women in a rebel village. a regular spanish army officer yelled out to the legion fighters to stop , they were shooting women. the reply from the legion soldiers was something along the lines that moorish women should be shot because they produce more rebel fighters if they live.
